The Value of employers' support for the Reserve Forces

Since January 2003, more than 14,000 members of the Reserve Forces (Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve, Territorial Army and Royal Auxiliary Air Force) have been mobilised for full-time service, mostly in Iraq.

Their achievements have been immense and would have been impossible without the support of their civilian employers. The benefits for the civilian employer may be less obvious, but with 80% if employers agreeing that Reservists are an asset to the UK workforce, they clearly see the advantage.

Leadership and management are among the areas it is most difficult for employers to provide training for – and key areas of weaknesses in many businesses and organisations. With these being exactly the sort of skills which the Reserve Forces develop most, it is easy to see the benefit employers reap from having a Reservist in their workplace.

Perhaps the main reason so many employers support their staff in the Reserve Forces is not so self serving – with 83% of employers saying that Reservists should be supported as a matter of principle.

Whatever your motivation as an employer, your support is gratefully received by the men and women of the Reserve Forces whether they are at work, home or on the front-line.

The SaBRE large corporates campaign aims to secure public declarations of support for Reservists from employers. It also seeks to encourage companies which lack a Reservist policy to develop one.

The launch at the beginning of June attracted national television, radio and print coverage reaching over 18 million viewers/listeners/readers.

More than 100 of the UK's largest companies have officially pledged their support for the country's volunteer soldiers, sailors and air crews.

The firms, including BT, Tesco, and Barclays, have joined a new campaign to get other employers, both in the public and private sector, to follow suit. If you would like to be part of this campaign please visit www.sabre.mod.uk to pledge your support.

Employers Abroad Scheme

Since January 2007, several employers have had the opportunity to visit Northern Ireland Reservists on exercise and on deployment in Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia. A programme of visits and UK briefing days is continuing throughout 2007. If your organization would like to participate please contact Athene Gordon on 02890 664902.

Exercise EXECUTIVE STRETCH, May 2008

The Exercise is an annual weekend of physical and mental 'stretching' for young managers. Organised and run by the Reserve Forces, it aims to introduce employers to the positive aspects of Reserve Forces training. This year more than 50 young executives and managers from a broad variety of backgrounds were put through their paces at Magilligan Training Centre. Highlights this year included trips in Puma helicopters, rigid raiders and lots of live firing.

"Every element of the weekend events had been planned and organised to perfection and participation has certainly enlightened me in relation to what the TA is all about. I was particularly impressed with the teamwork sprit and family feel of the organisation, which is seamlessly coupled with professionalism."- participant on Exercise EXECUTIVE STRETCH.

TA100

On 1st April 2008, the TA will celebrate the 100 th anniversary of its formation.

Throughout 2008, events around the UK will celebrate 100 years of service to the nation, during which TA soldiers have served alongside their Regular Army comrades in almost every major operation around the world.

But we will do more than simply look back. Whilst our heritage has been vital in shaping the organisation, TA 100 will also recognise and demonstrate the TA’s vital role today in supporting operations and its contribution to the UK’s overall defence capability.

And we will look ahead to a TA that is increasingly integrated with the Regular Army to create one cohesive force, a force that simply consists of full-time soldiers and part-time soldiers. It will be a force that will shape, and be shaped by, the nature of defence in the 21 st Century.

RFCA 100

2008 will also celebrate 100 years of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Associations.

'We find that we are constantly maltreating Volunteers for want of local knowledge and we feel it to be absolutely essential that they should have some power of organisation in the counties and of controlling their own affairs.' Haldane 1907.

The county organisations established by Lord Haldane are the RFCAs of today.

As details of events to celebrate TA 100 and RFCA 100 are finalised they will be posted here, presenting a comprehensive picture of where you can join in the celebrations.
