The Territorial Army in Northern Ireland

There are 2500 Territorial Army (TA) volunteer reserve soldiers in Northern Ireland commanded by HQNI & 38 (Irish) Brigade based in Lisburn. There are eleven different units in the Province comprising artillery, armour, infantry, signals, engineers, logistics, medical, intelligence, military police, officer training corps and a band. They are an integral part of the Army and are liable for mobilisation at a time of crisis. They were never part of the security forces employed in Northern Ireland but many have deployed in recent times to Afghanistan and Iraq. The Territorial Army is an essential element of the British Armed Forces. It forms one quarter of the British Army, playing the vital dual role of reinforcing the Regular Army and serving local communities in times of need.

The TA is that part of the British Army staffed on a paid voluntary basis by part-time personnel - everyday people with the drive to devote some of their spare time to an extremely important organisation.

In joining the TA you will have access to an exciting range of opportunities:

  • To develop your existing skills while learning new ones.
  • To push yourself to achieve things you never thought possible.
  • To play a fundamental role in fulfilling the Army's commitment to defensive, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations in the UK and worldwide.
