Army Training Unit (Northern Ireland) is responsible for the centralised training of all Army Reserve soldiers in Northern Ireland and beyond on a variety of courses that are held centrally in Ballykinler Training Centre. ATU (NI) is commanded by Initial Training Group (ITG) which delivers all regular and reserve phase 1 training throughout the UK. Our mission is:
‘Deliver Reserve Phase 1 and Phase 3 training to the standard required by the Common Military Syllabus (Reserve) Course Folder and other directed ATU (NI) outputs in order to meet the Army’s operational requirements’.
ATU (NI) is split into 2 Companies, Initial and Specialist. Initial Company delivers all Phase 1A training where new recruit soldiers are trained in all the initial military skills required to be an Army Reserve solider. These are delivered over 4 weekend modular courses or as a 7 day consolidated course. Initial Company also delivers the follow up course Phase 1B course which is a 2 week consolidated course.
Specialist Company delivers phase 3 courses which qualify trained soldiers as instructors in a variety of specialised military courses over weekends (modular) or week days (consolidated). These include Skill at Arms, Range Management, and Defence Instructional Techniques.
ATU (NI) is a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Army Reserve training. It is professionally accredited and externally validated to ensure continued excellence and applies continuous improvement best practise with the majority of courses attracting accredited qualifications.
High quality soldiers and officers from the Army Reserve are encouraged to apply for a tour at ATU (NI) as a phase 1 or phase 3 instructor. The personal and professional development of staff is key to the ethos of ATU (NI). There are opportunities to gain civilian and military qualifications, and participate in challenging Adventurous Training expeditions. This year ATU (NI) are conducting a Battlefield Study in the Falkland Islands and an expedition to the Ascension Islands.
