For HMS Hibernia the end of a very successful training and operations year finished in festive fun as the greatest minds that the Unit had to offer came together for a Christmas themed quiz night. Teams of six, each containing at least one Officer and one Senior rating competed for the honour of being crowned HMS Hibernia’s quiz team of the year. With the Permanent Staff asking the questions, pride, determination and the right to proclaim themselves quiz champions became the last big challenge of the year. In honour of the season those competing wore onesies or Christmas jumpers which added a fitting seasonal air to the competition.
A hard-fought competition witnessed the lead change hands until a winning team won the right to be crowned HMS Hibernia quiz champions 2017. With this came the reward of the grand prize in the shape of a selection box crammed with chocolate for each team member and, best of all, the right to brag about their victory.
However, the real winner was charity as, in the presence of Dame Mary Peters, a total of £200 was raised. The money raised by the competing teams was the first contribution to HMS Hibernia’s chosen charity for 2018, the Mary Peters Trust. A charity that aims to help young people achieve excellence in sport.
Speaking after the quiz competition (which his team didn’t win), HMS Hibernia’s Commanding Officer, Commander Neil Downing said, “this has been a busy but rewarding year for HMS Hibernia. We have continued to provide support to Royal Navy operations both in the UK and around the world and this will continue into 2018. For HMS Hibernia 2018 will undoubtedly be another busy year”.
