Exercise RED FLASH 2017 (Ex RF 17) was the first Squadron (Sqn) level Force Protection Field Exercise conducted by 502 Sqn since re-formation in 2013. Given the range of 14 trades on 502 Sqn, Ex RF 17 provided a unique opportunity for the development of Sqn cohesion, ethos and resilience via common learning through the exercising of Force Protection skills.

The modest exercise aim and objectives were to consolidate existing military skills: Patrolling, Navigation, Vehicle Checks, Living in the Field, Care under Fire, Role 1 Medical Treatment Facility (MTF). These activities were conducted under demanding conditions and were designed to develop leadership, physical and mental resilience and teamwork whilst under duress.

The exercise scenario was based on the handover/ takeover of Foyle Patrol Base and the set up / take down of the Role 1 MTF. This was during a 36 hour period of managed activity simulating deployed operations in a semi permissive environment.

As a first exercise to expose 502 Sqn reservists to the deployed operational environment Ex RF 17 was a resounding success. Even though this was the first time a Sqn level exercise had been conducted under field conditions, it demonstrated that a disparate group of Reserve personnel from a variety of trades and branches are more than capable of operating in a challenging environment, demonstrating cohesion, unity of purpose, effective communication and self-reliance.

The knowledge and skills acquired during EX RF 17 by 502 Sqn reservists represented a retention positive opportunity and a landmark event in the Sqn’s development whilst  demonstrating the relevance of developing Sqn personnel outwith their trade in support of ‘Whole Force’.
