HMS DUNCAN, Belfast’s affiliated Royal Navy ship, is in the final stages of build at Scotstoun on the Clyde. The Senior Officer, Commander Phil Game, and twenty of the Ship’s Company visited Belfast on Tuesday 7th February 2012 to provide the City with an update on her progress and to strengthen connections. As part of this, they hosted talks alongside the Royal Navy’s Presentation Team in the Barnett Room of the Belfast Harbour Office, Corporation Square.
The presentation focused on what the Royal Navy is doing today, including support in Afghanistan, and conduct of operations to counter piracy off the coast off Libya and in home waters. HMS DUNCAN followed up with specifics on her programme, and an idea of when she will physically visit Belfast.
A group of over 100 people, including local employers, council members, servicemen and women, and sea cadets attended the evening. Among them was the current Lord Lieutenant of Belfast, Dame Mary Peters DBE. Guests were given the opportunity to ask questions and to chat with Navy people about life at sea in the 21st Century, and what the affiliation to Belfast means for HMS DUNCAN. All in all the event was a great success, with an informative and enjoyable night had by all.
