Three runners from C Coy 2 R IRISH competed in the annual PSNI 10km road race at Newforge Country Club in South Belfast. There was suggestion that for some of the team it would be a welcome change to be running with the police as opposed to running from the police!
Starting at 1500hrs sharp, the course led us on a lap of the country club before taking us out and into the local park. It wasn’t long before the “racing snakes” had made their way to the front of the pack. We proceeded on a scenic route alongside the river Lagan. Although a relatively level course throughout, there was a single leg-burning hill to negotiate before reaching the finishing line. However the hill was the least of Ranger Hewitt’s worries as he led the field. He claimed that he must have been running faster than the course marshalls anticipated as there were no markers to guide him on the route – we all believe he just got lost. Nonetheless even with his moment of confusion he still managed to finish first with a very impressive time of 36.01 minutes well in front of a 1 SCOTS runner up. Ranger Hewitt was recently selected for the Army Cross Country Team having finished 4th in the Inter Corps championships 5,000m at Aldershot Stadium.
All in all it was a very enjoyable road race with the added bonus of beating the police. We are looking forward to next year’s event when we hope to improve our overall performance.
