In June this year the Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAF) Reserves in Northern Ireland, 502 (Ulster) Squadron were proud to host a very special evening at Hillsborough Castle to mark their centenary. The event brought together a diverse group of over 200 guests, including serving personnel, veterans, community leaders and representatives from across the region. It was an exceptional evening of reflection, remembrance, music and connection in one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic and stunning settings.
Guests were honoured by the presence of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester who serves as the Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. His Royal Highness spent several hours engaging with attendees, listening to stories and learning about the proud history of 502 Squadron – one of the oldest auxiliary units in the RAF. The evening also provided a chance to showcase the Squadron’s modern day role and how its members continue to contribute to the RAF’s operational capability and wider Defence output.
During his visit, The Duke also heard from guests about the evolving landscape of the defence and aerospace industry in Northern Ireland, highlighting the region’s ongoing contribution to the UK’s national security and economic resilience. The centenary celebration was not only a tribute to the Squadron’s legacy but also a celebration of its future – a powerful reminder of the enduring value of service, community and commitment in today’s world.
