Teenagers from 2nd (Northern Ireland) Battalion Army Cadet Force (ACF) have been answering the call of the wild this Summer, taking part in an adventure-filled Summer Camp in Altcar, Liverpool.

While many of their schoolmates were catching up on their rest or marking time on social media, these energetic Army Cadets were making their mark with an activity programme packed with sport and outdoor pursuits.  The fortnight of challenge, craic and camping made the Summer of ’17 one to remember, with new skills gained and new friendships forged.

Colonel Keith Dowell, Commandant of 2nd (Northern Ireland) Battalion Army Cadet Force, said, “Teenagers often get a bad press with people dismissing them as couch potatoes with few interests outside their smartphones, computers or social circle.  In our experience – and as these great kids demonstrate – nothing could be further from the truth.  Given the opportunity to get out and do something special, they are more than up for the challenge … and annual camp is all about providing challenge.

“Annual camp has traditionally been a highlight of Cadet life and young people continue to be inspired and stretched by the varied experiences it offers to let off steam and enjoy themselves after a tough year in school.   Importantly, parents have the reassurance of knowing that their kids are tackling outdoor adventure in a safe and supportive setting, supervised and encouraged by qualified staff.

“They also know we’ll help to bring out the best in their teenagers, helping them not only to gain practical skills but also to build confidence and experience to help them as they move into the world of work or compile their Personal Statement for college or university entrance. Parents are usually relieved to learn that all this comes with an astonishingly low price tag, in line with our policy to keep all Cadet activities affordable – we even provide free uniforms!”

The cadet detachments will all be starting back in September and look forward to welcoming new cadets.  For more information on joining the Army, Sea or Air Cadets in Northern Ireland, call 0800 730 730.
