Major James Gilpin named RCN Northern Ireland Defence Reservist Nurse of the Year 2025
Defence is spotlighting the achievements of Major James Gilpin, who was named RCN Northern Ireland Defence Reservist Nurse of the Year 2025 at June’s awards ceremony. His exceptional dual service exemplifies the best of both worlds – leading innovation in NHS stroke care whilst commanding a medical squadron in the Army Reserves.
The award had a very special meaning as it was presented in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Kerry McFadden who was a finalist for the Defence Nursing Reservist Award in 2024, but sadly passed away earlier this year. Kerry was referred to as a human dynamo and was one of the top military nurses of her generation. Her commitment to others extended beyond her life, as an organ donor of only months, her legacy has since transformed or saved the lives of seven others.
In his NHS role, Major James Gilpin has transformed stroke care delivery, driving innovation and teamwork to enhance patient outcomes across Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, as a Reserve officer with 210 (Northern Ireland) Multi-Role Medical Regiment, he has guided his medical squadron through one of the most significant Reserve medical exercises in recent years.
Defence Relationship Management (DRM) was proud to sponsor the Defence Reservist Nurse of the Year Award at the Royal College of Nursing Northern Ireland ceremony, recognising how Reserve service strengthens both sectors. The leadership, resilience and adaptability developed through military training directly enhances healthcare delivery, whilst clinical expertise from the NHS bolsters Defence’s medical capabilities and operational readiness.
Major Gilpin’s dual service demonstrates the powerful synergy between Defence and healthcare in Northern Ireland. His work ensures knowledge, professionalism and compassion flow between both sectors, with professionals like him leading the way in both saving lives and serving their country.
The partnership between Defence and Northern Ireland’s healthcare sector continues to thrive, with the ongoing recognition of individuals who make exceptional contributions to both their patients and their nation.
