DUNMORE ARMY CADETS REMEMBER ONE OF IRELAND’S TRUE MILITARY HEROES

Following on from a project which began last year, local Cadets from Dunmore Detachment in D Company worked alongside the North Irish Horse Regimental Association to put together a display to honour a First World War hero.

This display, along with an educational booklet, was launched back in September 2015 and was officially opened by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Antrim Joan Christie.

The display has been temporarily moved out of Dunmore Park, Army Reserve Centre, where Dunmore Detachment parade on a Monday evening, to go along with other North Irish Horse Exhibitions at Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre. The display will be there until the end of February. 

Dunmore Detachment Commander, Company Sergeant Major Instructor Kirkham, said, “We strongly believe that Richard West’s story should be told and this is why the Cadets of Dunmore have endeavoured to do this through the publication of a booklet to educate the youth of today which will also ensure that he will ever be remembered as one of Ireland’s True Military Heroes.”

MP for South Antrim Danny Kinahan commented, “As the current Honorary Colonel of the North Irish Horse I praise the wonderful efforts of Dunmore ACF in bringing the astonishing achievements of Lt. Col Richard West to public prominence through this thoroughly researched display”. 

This project is a very fitting tribute to a true local hero by young people who aspire to the same values and traditions by which West himself lived and died. When young people take time to remember and research the past, it protects our heritage.
