HARRYVILLE MEN’S SHED PROUD TO SIGN THE ARMED FORCES CONVENANT

A Strong community turnout as Harryville Men’s Shed signs the Armed Forces Covenant.Harryville Men’s Shed has formally pledged its support for the Armed Forces community, signing the Armed Forces Covenant at an event in Ballymena last week.
A large turnout from the local community gathered at Ballymena Services Club to witness the signing and learn more about the Covenant and the support it encourages for serving personnel, Reservists, veterans and their families.
The Covenant was signed by Harryville Men’s Shed Chairman, Denver McKeekin, and Lieutenant Townsley of 591 Field Squadron, 71 Engineer Regiment, on behalf of Defence.
Denver McKeekin, Chairman of Harryville Men’s Shed, said: “We’re proud to support our community and to create a place where those who serve, or have served, can connect.”
The event was also attended by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell, who joined members of the Men’s Shed and the wider community for the occasion.

Defence Relationship Manager Darren Niven spoke about the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, the importance of public pledges of support, and the growing network of Armed Forces-friendly organisations across Northern Ireland.
Darren said: “It’s brilliant to see the Armed Forces Covenant network growing across Northern Ireland. Harryville Men’s Shed’s commitment to supporting those who have served, and those currently serving, is exactly the kind of example we hope other groups and employers across NI will follow.”
Founded in 2012, Harryville Men’s Shed promotes positive mental and physical wellbeing among its members and the wider community. It offers a welcoming space where local men can meet, socialise and take part in activities including woodwork, gardening, and physical exercise and training.
The organisation also works to tackle loneliness, social isolation and poor mental health, helping members build confidence and develop new skills. Veterans are already represented within its membership and are actively encouraged to get involved.
By signing the Armed Forces Covenant, Harryville Men’s Shed has made a public commitment to promote its Armed Forces-friendly approach, support Armed Forces charities, and recognise the valuable skills and experience of veterans and Service leavers.
The strong turnout on the night reflected the value placed on the Armed Forces community across Harryville and the wider Ballymena area.
