HMS HIBERNIA, the Royal Navy Reserve training centre based in Thievpal Barracks enjoyed the honour of hosting eight World War Two Royal Navy veterans, all recipients of the Arctic Star Medal.

The ceremony was convened by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Belfast, Mrs Fionnuala Jay-O’Boyle, and was organised by the Senior Naval Officer Northern Ireland, Commander John Gray Royal Navy.  In support of their visit the Commanding Officer HMS HIBERNIA, Commander Ian Allen Royal Navy Reserve, together with members of the ship’s company, joined the veterans and their families in the suitably bedecked drill hall.

Formally opening the ceremony, Cdr Gray gave a speech on the history of the Arctic Convoys before handing over to the Lord Lieutenant who recognised the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served in the Arctic convoys during the Second World War. This was followed by a two minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in this theatre of the war.  The ceremony was brought to a close with the famous naval tradition of “Up Spirits”.

Following this, a lunch was held with the opportunity to swap stories and anecdotes.  Members of HIBERNIA’s ship’s company learnt first-hand the challenges faced by all those who undertook the gruelling convoy duties to Russia and their importance in ensuring victory.

Speaking after the event, Commander Allen said, “It was a great privilege to host the Artic Star recipients and their families.  The understanding of the contribution of these veterans was greatly enhanced by their visit and HMS HIBERNIA  was proud to host them”.
