HMS HIBERNIA – OFFICIAL OPENING OF TRAINING FACILITIES

The impressive new extension and facilities to the Royal Navy Reserve training base HMS HIBERNIA were formally opened in October 2014 when the ribbon was cut by the Deputy Commander Maritime Reserves, Captain Martin Quinn.

The new facilities, located within Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn, have been designed to support the planned growth of Royal Navy Reserve personnel required as part of the government’s plans for Future Reserves 2020.  In partnership with RFCA the new facilities included the incorporation and refitting of the extra office and storeroom space to provide additional classrooms equipped with modern teaching equipment, improved changing areas for personnel and additional office and administration space.  RFCA’s role in managing and funding the extension has been pivotal in enhancing the training facilities and capability of HMS HIBERNIA.

Speaking of the extension to HMS HIBERNIA, the Commanding Officer, Commander Ian Allen, said “The money invested over the past year in HMS HIBERNIA has allowed us to develop the physical infrastructure and facilities within the building, greatly enhancing our ability to train and support Naval Reservists in Lisburn”.   He added: “The refurbishment of our Unit has included a very impressive facelift and clearly illustrates the Royal Navy’s commitment to supporting and growing the Royal Naval Reserve in Northern Ireland in keeping with the Governments Future Reserves 2020 programme”. 

The official cutting of the ribbon was followed by the Royal Navy’s ceremonial sunset, a historic ceremony in which the White Ensign is lowered in the evening as the sun goes down.
