Newtownabbey Borough Council held a civic reception on Thursday 9th February 2012 at Mossley Hill to honour some of the local men and women of the Territorial Army and Reserve Forces who have served overseas.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alderman Billy Webb, commented:
“The Council recognises the commitment and contribution of apparently ‘ordinary’ men and women called upon to perform extraordinary duties whilst on operations. All reservists need the active support of family and friends, as well as the wider community. I am pleased tonight to be able to pay tribute not just to the local reservists themselves but also to their families and friends who provide the encouragement and emotional support whilst carrying on life as normal until they return.”
A Territorial from Newtownabbey who is preparing for deployment for Afghanistan later this year, added, “Knowing that we have support at home makes a real difference and we’re delighted to be honoured with this Civic Reception. It’s good to know that when we deploy, our community will appreciate not only the value of our role overseas but also the pressure that deployment imposes on our families.”
