Local employers from Northern Ireland, Scotland and the North of England joined Royal Marines Reserve Scotland for an intensive day of military training at Dunkeld’s dramatic Highland setting.

Exercise Wet Kipper took the group to Polney Crag and the River Braan, where they experienced the physical and mental challenges that build the resilience and leadership skills valued in Reserve service. The day began with abseiling demonstrations on steep terrain before progressing to a demanding 20-metre descent, with employers learning rope work and safety techniques under expert Marine instruction.

At the river crossing site, participants tackled tension line rope bridges and water obstacle crossings using military kit, experiencing first-hand how Marines overcome complex challenges through teamwork and clear communication. The practical sessions also covered improvised casualty carries and field stretcher techniques, highlighting the problem-solving abilities that Reservists develop through their training.

The Highland Reserve Forces & Cadets Association supported the exercise as part of ongoing efforts to demonstrate the Armed Forces Covenant’s value to employers. Through witnessing these demanding drills, employers gained direct insight into how Reserve training develops transferable skills including leadership under pressure, systematic risk assessment, and effective team coordination.

RFCA Northern Ireland’s Defence Relationship Management programme continues to create these immersive opportunities, helping employers understand the professional advantages that Reserve-trained employees bring to civilian roles.
