RFCA NI members were privileged to attend a memorable evening at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, on Friday, marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain as part of the RAF NI Annual Business Engagement Event.
The event brought together employers, civic leaders, and Armed Forces Covenant signatories—an inspiring reminder of the vital role that Northern Irish employers continue to play in supporting our Reservists and Armed Forces community. This annual gathering serves as a cornerstone for strengthening relationships between the business sector and defence, fostering partnerships that benefit both our local economy and national security.
A spectacle that captured everyone’s attention was the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which flew majestically overhead against the backdrop of Belfast’s skyline, casting a poignant echo of our nation’s aerial heritage. The timing was perfect, creating a truly unforgettable moment that connected past sacrifice with present celebration.
Guests were also treated to guided tours of Stormont’s historic chambers, including the Senate Chamber, which served as a Royal Air Force operations room during World War II. An inscription on the marble balustrade commemorates this significant wartime role, providing a tangible link between the venue and the evening’s commemorative purpose.
The evening also honoured Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, newly appointed Chief of the Air Staff and Northern Ireland-born—his presence enriching the sense of homecoming and connection between history and present-day leadership. His appointment represents a proud moment for Northern Ireland’s contribution to senior military leadership.
The event was sponsored by RFCA NI, Defence Relationship Management, ADS, and the Royal Air Force, demonstrating the collaborative approach needed to maintain strong defence-industry partnerships.
RFCA NI takes pride in being part of such a meaningful gathering, where remembrance, place, and the ongoing commitment of employers to Defence—and to Northern Ireland’s future—came together so powerfully.
