SEA CADETS PROVIDE GUARD OF HONOUR FOR THE DUKE OF YORK
A service was held at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast on 4 August, to mark the 100 year anniversary of the start of the Great War. Dozens of descendants of the soldiers who fought in the Great War were among hundreds of people who attended the service, as well as the Duke of York and the First Minister, Peter Robinson.
The Northern Ireland Sea Cadet Corps provided a Guard of Honour on the steps of St Anne’s Cathedral for the arrival of the Duke of York and they represented the cadet movements exceptionally.
The cadets were also represented during the service, with one cadet from each service lighting a candle. There was also a reading given by The Duke of York and a poem read by Jeffrey Donaldson MP, chairman of the Northern Ireland World War One Centenary Committee.
Secretary of State Theresa Villiers said: “I thought it was a fitting commemoration for the thousands of men from throughout the island of Ireland for paying the ultimate sacrifice and for their huge bravery and courage.”
